Physical benefits of weight training have been well documented. People of every age group can benefit through weight training. Some of these benefits include increase in muscle size, strengthening of tendons and ligaments, increase in bone density, improved metabolic efficiency, decrease in blood pressure, decrease in the risk of injury, improved resistance to diseases and increased physical performance.
Apart from improving physical appearance, weight training has also been characterized as a positive health behavior having psychological benefits. Obesity and overweight are two most predominant health problems in youth. Weight training exercises are useful in reducing weight in young men and women. Today, youth are more conscious about their appearance. Weight training exercises have a significant impact on body toning and improving the overall physical appearance of a person, thereby increasing confidence levels and providing self-esteem.
A qualitative study was conducted by researchers from La Trobe University, Australia in order to investigate the psychological and physiological benefits of strength training programs on young people with cerebral palsy. Apart from improving perceptions, strength, flexibility, posture and walking, weight training exercises also increased the feeling of wellbeing in the patients.
In a separate study, males undergoing weight training have been found to be more sociable, impulsive and outgoing. Weight training significantly reduces tension and stress levels in young minds.
