Research has proven that light to moderate physical activity like walking, aerobic, swimming, and cycling and jogging plays a significant role in preventing the progression of heart failure. Hence, physical exercise is very much useful for heart patients. Whether weight training has similar effects on heart or not is always a matter of controversy.
Several heart patients have the opinion that weight training is not suitable for them and their heart. However, a study conducted was conducted in December 2000 to find out the relation between the weight training and heart attack. As per the findings of this study, there is no significant impact caused due to weight training on the heart. Heart patients can indeed tolerate the strain of light to moderate weight training along with the regular aerobic exercises. However, it is important to have a consultation with the physician before you start or begin any type of weight training.
American Heart Association has indeed approved weight training to people with several kinds of heart diseases. Some of the benefits of weight training or resistance training include increased muscle strength, increased bone density, increased lean muscle mass, increased insulin sensitivity and increased endurance. Apart from these, weight training also improves cardiovascular functioning. Resistance training causes a decrease in an individual’s resting blood pressure and heart rate while lifting weights. Individuals doing regular resistance training have reduced stress levels and fat levels.
